Rolling in Success: Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight Shines at the SOGB National Finals!
What a weekend, what a tournament, and what a day for the Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight indoor bowls team!
Our talented squad recently travelled across the Solent to compete in the prestigious Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) National Indoor Bowls Competition at the Plymouth Life Centre. Competing in a massive field of over 80 elite bowlers from across the country, our athletes poured their hearts onto the rinks and proved exactly what island determination looks like.
Our epic three-day journey unfolded:
Friday: Arrival & Settling In
The adventure began on Friday as the team arrived in Plymouth. The afternoon was all about getting a feel for the mats with a crucial practice session, followed by a fantastic "meet and greet" evening. It was a wonderful opportunity for our players to catch up with old friends and make new ones from the wider SOGB community before the serious business began.
Saturday: The Marathon Competition
Saturday was a gruelling, all-day testing ground. The atmosphere was electric, the competition fierce, and the focus intense. Our bowlers played match after match, digging deep, showing incredible sportsmanship, and executing brilliant shots to secure their spots for the final showdown.
Sunday: Finals Day Drama!
After a demanding weekend, Sunday was Finals Day, and our athletes absolutely rose to the occasion. Facing off against the best of the best, our duos held their own in incredibly tough flights:
| Bowlers | Placement | Division |
| Samantha & Sarah | 8th Place | Division A |
| Summer & Ben | 7th Place | Division A |
| Caitlin & Eloise | 8th Place | Division B |
To place this high out of more than 80 bowlers nationwide is a phenomenal achievement. Every single one of you bowled brilliantly, we are incredibly proud of you, Eloise, Sarah, Ben, Caitlin, Summer and Sam!
A Massive Thank You to Our Village
An expedition like this doesn't happen without an incredible support system. We want to extend our thanks to the amazing people and organisations who backed us every step of the way:
Wightlink in the Community: For getting us across the water safely and kickstarting our journey.
Vestas: For sponsoring our amazing, sharp-looking new team tops. We looked the part and felt like champions!
WightAID: For funding our accommodation and giving the team a comfortable place to rest and recharge.
Cridmore Farm: For our fantastic new kit bags, keeping all our gear organised.
A massive shout-out to our dedicated coaches, Gill and Gina, for their endless guidance, and to the wonderful army of supporters who made the long journey down to Plymouth to cheer us on from the sidelines. Your voices carried us through!
Time to Rest!
With the trophies decided and the kit packed away, the hard work is officially done. Now, it’s time for the team to kick back, put their feet up, and enjoy a well-deserved, relaxing summer evening.
Huge congratulations again to the whole team, you’ve done the Isle of Wight proud! 🎳🏆
